Toyota Seeks to Double Hybrid Models

TOKYO --- Toyota plans to double its number of hybrid gasoline-electric powered vehicles by as early as 2010. The company would then have 14 hybrid models.

Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe discussed the company's plans at a news conference in Tokyo, the Los Angeles Times reported. Those plans include further research and development of hybrids that plug into an electric power supply.

Moreover, Toyota will devote further research into new powertrain technologies and engines that can burn mixtures of ethanol and gasoline. The first ethanol engines from Toyota will be introduced next year in Brazil. Brazil already has a system for distributing the fuel.
